Guest Dede Albright Rector

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

It really is a great blessing to have the opportunity to experiment with these five blogs.  Guest blogging is a cool thing to do, and to offer to others.  And sometimes, timing and events are uncommon, as you will see in a minute. Today’s Guest Blogger is from Orlando, Florida, Dede Albright Rector.

Just a Pebble in a Pond

My regular Wednesday morning started off with this Facebook post: Dede Albright Rector: Today and everyday…”know that I will do more than just pass through this life, I’ll leave nothing less than something that says I was here.”

It was late in the afternoon when this came across my dashboard, knocking the breath out of me: Bethal Bird – Dede, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend…here’s another story. Very tragic. Take care.

About an hour later, my husband walked up to me as I tried to work at my desk, put his hand on my shoulder and said, “I thought you would want to know. It has been reported that Dawn knew what she wanted to do with her life the day she and her family visited SeaWorld, when she was 9 years old.”

Very First Female Trainer At SeaWorld

Very First Female Trainer At SeaWorld

And, suddenly, I was remembering my own moment of clarity: about 9 years old myself and standing in the stadium at Miami Seaquarium, awestruck by my first dolphin show, then telling my parents afterward, “I’m going to do that someday.” And I did. I became the 1st female trainer at SeaWorld of Florida, in 1978, starting at the Seal & Otter Stadium. In 1979, I was reassigned to the Killer Whale & Dolphin stadium.

Dawn visited SeaWorld with her family in 1979 or early 1980.

Later that evening, I posted this: Dede Albright Rector: Struck by the Laws of Unintended Consequences colliding with It’s A Small World. Awed by how a seemingly tiny ripple can become a tsunami. We are all interconnected, and make such awful mistakes when we forget that simple truth.

I am proud to have been a very early part of what became a revolution in animal training and has since spread across the entire zoological community. Back then and to this day, my colleagues and I made a difference in the lives of millions of people and some incredibly special creatures.  I am even prouder that I paved the way for other little girls to follow a dream. Though it was, at times, dangerous work, never did I imagine that one of us would die doing what we love.

Now, how I ache and hurt for this young woman’s family, friends and colleagues – including the animals who were her most beloved co-workers.  But, I do not regret following my dream – not for one moment -  and I don’t think Dawn does either.

I am, however, reminded that we never know who we will influence, whether we are in the conscious role of leadership, or simply living our lives next to others. The small drop of our personal pebble in the pond continues to ripple and expand and encompass so much more than we can ever imagine. All the more reason to make every day our very best, and to do what we love with the utmost care and love, always.

Editors note:  Dede would like to offer this Song for today’s readers.  It was part of all that was happening during this tragedy, and an important reminder for all of us.

What’s More Terrible?

Are You Willing To Change Yourself?

Are You Willing To Change Yourself?

None of us is perfect.  Duh, right?

Yet some find a way to serve, to strive and not to yield.  Are you one of them?  Doubtful.

“Nothing is more terrible than ignorance in action.” Goethe

If you have good answers to life’s most basic questions, then you are not ignorant.

There are basic questions in Life’s Big Four:  Mind, Body, Spirit and Money.

If you have no idea what this means, click ignorant.

Hey, I’m not trying to be a jerk. Instead, trying to be your catalyst for positive change.  Change only comes when you learn how to kick your own butt.

Since you are too afraid to do it, I’ve volunteered to attempt to be the spark that lights your fire, your passion, for your transformational change.

Sea World Tragedy

Every Day Is An Opportunity To Learn

Every Day Is An Opportunity To Learn

Sea World. Orlando, Florida.

Tragedy.

Please pray for anyone and everyone affected by this horrible tragedy.

Eerily, one week ago, before I was to deliver a keynote speech, the presenter before me was a Sea World Killer Whale Trainer for 35 years.

He co-wrote the book, Whale Done, with Ken Blanchard.

The Killer Whale trainers are extraordinary human beings, dedicating their lives to training one of nature’s most notorious creatures.

His speech focused on how animal training and leadership of humans, is not that different. Through relationships, trust must be developed in order for great things to happen. Trust and relationships are the core of great leadership.

And, even with our best efforts, unwelcome things can and will happen.

Toyota just announced on a TV commercial a minute ago, “A new company fixes it’s mistakes, a great company learns from them.”

Pray that bad things won’t happen, but be prepared for when they do.

God never said our journey would be easy, just that we would never have to go alone.

Everybody Loves To Learn

You can’t teach a person anything, you can only help them discover it within themselves.

Evil Will Flourish If….

A Few Good Men?

A Few Good Men?

“All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.” — unknown

Next time you find yourself complaining about what someone else ought to to, needs to do, or should do, pause for a moment and ask yourself this question:

What “good” am I going to do today that I’ve been putting off?

Days turn into weeks.  Weeks turn into months and month into years.

Do some constructive “thing” that signals you are part of the solution.

Because if you’re not part of the solution, then what are you, really?

The Cross

The Cross

What will it take to be a better person?  To pray more, give more, hope more?

What will it take to be a better person?  To want less, take less, worry less?

Here’s your test.  If someone didn’t know you, would they know you worshiped God?

About seven years ago, when our son was two, I removed my crucifix and hung it on a closet door hinge, while we went about our father/son wrestling match.

For awhile, each evening was the same. After dinner, there was play time on the floor, resulting in some sort of wrestling match.  Two things ultimately happened:

  1. Switched from eye glasses to contacts
  2. Hung the crucifix up for the last time

Fussing with glasses and a necklace everyday got old. And then the epiphany.  Would people know I’m a Christian without the necklace?

And by the way, in Florida, our laid back lifestyle only calls for wearing shirts for Work, Church or the Grocery Store, so the necklace was almost always visible.

So I just decided to do it.  To keep the necklace off.

And then, two years later, the answer was convincing enough to again feel comfortable enough to wear the crucifix.

If you went two years without any visible Christian displays, would people know?  Would it change you?

Small Habits Shape The Spirit

Ignoring The Clock Doesn't Make It Go Away

Ignoring The Clock Doesn't Make It Go Away

Small, seemingly insignificant habits shape our spirit.

The things we do.  The things we don’t do.

Many people think life will eventually get easier.  Good luck with that.

Seriously, life is hard.  This is exactly the reason why small daily habits help focus us on our lifelong spiritual journey.

One day our number is going to be called.  April 2009, I began a new habit.  Very simple – start each day on my knees with three important prayers.

What’s holding you back from something similar?  The clock is ticking and the alarm will go off.

Are you ready for it?

Fatherless? Shepherdless?

Powerful. Significant. Troublesome. Real.

Fatherless.  Sheperdless.  Is it your fault?  Probably.

Happy Birthday Boy Scouts

Be Prepared

Be Prepared

On February 8, 2010, the Boy Scouts of America celebrated 100 years of cheerful service to America’s youth. Since the Boy Scouts of America’s inception in 1910, members have learned to live by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law through community services and “helping other people at all times.” What began with a single act of service on a foggy London night quickly evolved into daily “Good Turns.” These have included selling war bonds, collecting food for needy families, and growing victory gardens during World War II.

My son and I are camping with our Cub Scout Pack.  Thank God for that foggy London night, 100 years ago.

License? You Have Your License?

Never Give The Same Speech Twice

Never Give The Same Speech Twice

Do you have your license?

Do you go outside with, or, without it?

At what age did you receive your license?

How much does it cost to renew your license?

Do you like the photo on your license?

Do you use your license all day, everyday?

What license?

Your license to do good.

You saw that one coming didn’t you?

Probably not.
