You control nothing

LinkedIn message recently.

As an Executive Coach, my job is to teach Executives to fish.

A CEO literally controls nothing, but influences everything.

It’s the same for the parent of a teenager, you control nothing but you can influence everything.

Your example.

Your vision of the future.

The simplicity with which you live your life.

No one listens to what you say, they just watch what you do.

Organizational Spirit

West Chester University Sig Ep House
West Chester University Sig Ep House. Lived on second floor for a year.

From a lifetime at Disney, particularly the last 15 years at Disney Institute, i saw first hand from countless (about 2,000) looks inside industries and organizations, that an overwhelming majority are like a ship without a rudder.

No rudder.

No foundational, guiding organizational values.

Rarer still, i astonishingly discovered, are organizations where the values are actually defined, not simply implied.

ORCHIDB

  • Openness
  • Respect
  • Courage
  • Honesty
  • Integrity
  • Diversity
  • Balance

Not until the early 1990’s did we actually have written down leadership values.

A list is a great start, but ineffective without agreed upon definitions.

We did that.

We defined all seven core Disney leadership values.

It changed everything.

For the first time, we all had clear organizational expectations around behaviors.

Behaviors, not human resources concepts or theories.

Perhaps sometime after the Disney Leadership Book is published i will be able to refer you to the page(s) where our ORCHIDB values are explained in detail.

Hidden message was unintentionally created

Awoke at 3:30 AM with a Keynote Speaking business idea. Stayed up after writing it down. Too excited to go back to sleep.

At 4:00 AM i emailed an executive client with the following message, along with the photo in this post…

Did you catch the hidden msg?

Clarity of purpose ranks (ties) with being born, and becoming a dad.

The integrity of this profound belief is innocently illustrated in a random text.

Vision/purpose is THE most important of 19 blueprints.

How you amplify this as CEO is how well it will be heard (and received) in the far corners of your organization’s culture.

Be amazed and be amazing. There is no try, only do.

Two writers, speakers, podcasters, and hikers

Jody Maberry podcaster in Kuwait
Jody Maberry writing early yesterday morning as we awaited Room Service breakfast and prepared for a 9:45AM hotel departure.

Two writers, speakers, podcasters, and hikers we are. Jody and me.

Both of us a long way from home.

Both of us convinced the only thing different with this culture and ours is the geography.

The prevailing American image of the Middle East is not favorable. Once you spend a few days and mix in with the people, you realize it’s inaccurate.

Habits define you

habits
Habits are either by design or by default.

Ever catch yourself examining other people’s behaviors and instantly liking or disliking certain attributes?

Do you believe that what we like and dislike is a reflection of our own daily behaviors?

Observing others is a great window into how we are perceived by others.

This is scary for the simple reason that the things we dislike in others – that’s what we are unknowingly projecting as well.

This is exciting because we have many positive blind spots. We become aware of the goodness we carry and project.

Our temptation is to downplay both.

“I’m not that annoying.”

“I’m not that wonderful.”
