Examining and reflecting on myself, i ask…

What spiritual expectations are needed?

What spiritual expectations are nice to have?

What spiritual expectations are unnecessary?

What spiritual expectations are harmful?

Thoughts control habits.

Habits control results.

Therefore thoughts control my spiritual results.

And what happens to my habits and results if i reduce or eliminate unnecessary and harmful spiritual expectations?

Less than expected

Family at National Park Sign
2024. My instincts taught me to be intentional about simple, unique annual traditions.

People, including myself, expect so much.

Why?

Because we have been trained by media to think against our instincts.

The Cosmos trained us to survive. The industrial complex, including the rise of clever marketing genius, trained us to believe we could only become complete if we lived a certain way. With ‘more’. With ‘better’.

In reality, Pop Tarts are the least of our “must haves” for breakfast (or snacks).

Who knew?

Expectations gap and unhappiness – first example. Our imagination (hopeful expectations) is greater than our reality (actual outcomes).

Dying well is directly proportional to our ability to accomplish two simple concepts.

To accomplish these two soon enough in our life so that we can live the rest of our life carrying peace and contentment everywhere we go.

  1. Peace with who you are
  2. Content with what you have

Managing our expectations begins by creating our big picture expectation – what we can refer to as our “vision”.

Stop looking at the wrong thing

Reading for fourth Sunday of Lent
My assigned reading next Sunday.

i asked the 15-year old to get to know Jesus and stop focusing on the human imperfections in Christians.

Why?

Focus on the ideal, not the reality.

Why?

So you can focus your efforts and work hard on living a life that uses the ideal as the benchmark, not the reality.
