When?

Table top orchids
Yesterday at Ritz Carlton. Loved the mashup of orchid and conifer.

When was the last time you began your day on your knees?

One answer, i think, passes the lifetime opportunity test., “First thing this morning.”

That answer is, “First thing this morning.”

i crack myself up

Heart shaped stone
Found this one week ago. Took it to Walt Disney World as a gift.

Life is funny sometimes.

Just realized i forgot to get down on my knees and pray after waking up.

Been doing this every day since April 1, 2000.

Rather than get on my knees at the airport gate, i quietly folded my hands, bowed my head, closed my eyes, as i sat with my Mac on my lap and 200 people surrounding me.

Play the hand you’re dealt.

PS. i’m going to Walt Disney World.

The good news is there’s hope if we plan on always being hopeful

Garage door repair Orlando
So comforting to have this on the door so we knew right away who to call.

The good news is there’s hope, if we plan on always being hopeful.

When we are busy “fighting fires” in our daily lives, it can be difficult to focus on hope.

Be careful this doesn’t become your default daily culture.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

The straw that breaks the camel’s back is real

Runner's shadows
Father and son running for their lives yesterday. Preaching and doing should be the same activity.

The straw that breaks the camel’s back is real.

Once or twice a month my wife and i volunteer at our Church. My involvement requires studying and time invested to practice a 60-second reading. This often consumes several hours of my time.

Consistently, i have the recurring conversation with myself about eliminating this one simple activity. It’s only takes a minute to read the scripture to the congregation. But it takes noticeable (to me, but to no one else) emotional energy to prepare.

Energy that often feels like too much, when added to an already emotionally-filled schedule.

You can’t do it all

Beach sunflower
One of my favorite flowers, the Florida beach sunflower.

You can’t do it all.

People who’ve neglected important things in their life (and there are a million reasons why), will have a reckoning at some point.

It’s happened to me and it will continue to happen to me.

Same for you.

i’m motivated to create a life as i age that won’t place stock on someone else helping me address the things i’m neglecting now because of the million excuses readily available.

That’s a leading cause for depression as we age – investing in things that change (but we didn’t plan on them changing). Our situation can change in an instant and if our life’s plan didn’t account for that, we’re sunk.

For example, as i get older, it would be stereotypical for me (as a parent) to think our son will help take care of me in my final years. So it’s tempting to not make difficult choices, like downsizing out of a lifelong residence into a senior facility. First because these choices are painful and second because it’s so much work.

Remember investing in things that change?

What if something tragic happens to my son (and wife)?

Odds are low but they are not zero.

Conclusion, plan on worst case scenario and rejoice when it doesn’t happen.

And remember that not being prepared is a regretful (and perhaps sinful) choice.
