Pre was a rebel

A classic “To whom it may concern” letter…
Thank you Lauren Fleshman, for being a rebel.

Steve Prefontaine, Pre, was a rebel.

Pre was also an Oregon runner.

Pre held American running records. He held the 1972 Munich Olympics 5,000 meters race lead three times, including the final backstretch. He finished fourth in what was his gutsiest race ever.

Lasse Viren, who won the 10,000 in Olympic and World-Record time, out-kicked Pre.

Viren went on to win double Olympic Gold again in the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 5k and 10k.

The other side of comfort, predictability, and conformity is non-conformity.

Steve Prefontaine not only inspired people with his assertive running style, Pre inspired others with his thinking.

He did not like doing things the way others recommended, particularly his coach Bill Bowerman.

Bowerman co-founded Nike with Phil Knight.

Bowerman was the 1972 Team USA Olympic Track & Field team head coach.

Bowerman was Pre’s coach.

Bowerman tried to break Pre from being a front runner.

Pre may have won the Olympic 5000 gold if he ran his own race. We will never know because Pre took Coach Bowerman’s advice and stayed with the pack.

The pack boxed Pre in and he was unable to break free.

Pre is not at his best when boxed in.

None of us are.

Habits feel safe

Freedom: To want nothing. To expect nothing. To depend on nothing.

Habits feel safe.

Good habits alleviate, even eliminate, regret.

Peace thrives in a no-regret karma.

No anger.

None.

Why would we even consider it?

Peace.

Which is why you’ve learned to shun anger.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Genius

Grasshopper, try to take the pebble from my hand.

While working with my media company yesterday, the conversation turned to timeless wisdom.

The discussion led us to YouTube and the clip you see above.

From an old TV show such incredible truth, it floored us because of its profound simplicity.

It was a microphone drop moment.

The name Grasshopper originated here.

Gratitude

Another photo from the homeowners dock. Quite a lovely place for a phone call.

When we drove to Epcot for dinner two days ago, a car pulled out in front of us while we traveled at 55-mph (88-kph).

Was grateful for so many things:

  • Eyesight
  • Being able to drive
  • Being with family
  • Able to go to Epcot for dinner on a moment’s notice
  • Having three seconds in the day to “lose” from the slowdown
  • Having well-maintained roads, everywhere
  • No one got hurt
  • Nothing was damaged
  • Was driving the speed-limit
  • Having an adult mindset to focus on gratitude, not “poor driving judgement”
  • Seeing the long line of vehicles behind us and realizing the driver made a practical move

Classic good vs evil

Yesterday in Southwest Florida. Palm tree reflection is intentional. We enjoyed the movie’s debut yesterday.

May the force for good be with you.

All day, today.

All day, everyday.
