Heaven on Earth

Dear Son,

Your Grandfather’s birthday is today, May 19. He would have been 84.

You guys were two months away from meeting each other.

Our Summer trip to Pennsylvania was to be your first.

At less than a year old, you would never remember the meeting.

At the deepest depths of your Grandfather’s Alzheimers, he would never remember it either.

But he died on Good Friday.

Your Mom and i would have remembered the meeting and taken photos, but it never happened.

Another significant day today is…

World IBD Day is today.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is incurable.

And…

Your dad leaves for Glacier 11 days from today.

You leave for Glacier in 14 days.

i spend 11 days there.

You get eight.

Never let your memories be bigger than your dreams.

Meet at Church?

This morning.

Meeting at the Church.

Nature will be our Church this Saturday morning.

An hour walk.

With one of September’s travel companions.

PS. Update since writing this two hours ago – we both biked to the Church and then i biked a couple miles back to his house (to keep the conversation going) after our walk.

Artist Rachel Sussman is obsessed with very old things that are still alive. Things like the Pafuri baobab, a South African tree that is likely at least 2,000 years old — and requires an armed guard escort to visit. Or the stromatolites of Western Australia, organisms connected to the oxygenation of the planet that began some 3.5 billion years ago. She has spent years tracking down the world’s oldest organisms. Here, take a look at her photographs of a world that has lasted for millennia

i climb this mountain…

Six months ago.

Why do you like Glacier National Park so much?

The initial reaction is, “i don’t know, i just do.”

Deeper dive, not relenting on the root reason.

“Glacier does something to me when i visit, and when i think about the memories and the future trips.”

What then?

Nature.

Nature imitates life.

Glacier has become like a familiar friend – someone i trust.

i climb this mountain…

To look through God’s window.

Is good karma real?

Found and booked yet another Summer accommodation, flight, and car for an additional Glacier National Park trip this Summer.

Also yesterday, the Granite Park Chalet confirmation email arrived.

Three nights, four-days at a 6,600′ base camp.

Cellular signals are decent at “Granite”, making writing and working easier than ever.
