From paralyzing to no big deal in one try

Highline trail
It was a major accomplishment.

Highline trail
The trail returned to less intimidating.

The Highline Trail was no less dangerous yesterday than a few days before, but it was far less intimidating the second time around. This afforded Cheryl the opportunity to appreciate what we (our son and i) did a few days prior. Until you conquer this personally, you have no idea – i literally didn’t know if i’d be able to turn around and go back.

When our Son and i hiked the scary 200 meter portion a few days prior, i didn’t know if i had the ability to turn around and return to the Logan Pass Visitor Center. Without going back over the same 200 meters we had just finished, it’s an 11-mile walk to the nearest road trailhead, with no other options; and no way to let Cheryl know what was happening. It would have been a disaster – that’s how afraid i was.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Falsely believed for 45 years

Prince of Wales Hotel
Arrived mid-morning. Crazy windy, cold day. Front view.

Prince of Wales Hotel lobby
The back windows provide stunning views.

Prince of Wales Hotel lobby
The first five minutes after arriving.

Prince of Wales Hotel outside
Howling cold wind out back.

Prince of Wales Hotel
Regal.

Prince of Wales Hotel
The wind had nothing to stop it. The town of Waterton is on the right edge.

Had wanted to visit Prince of Wales Hotel since the first time i saw a photograph of it, maybe 45 years ago. Our day trip intervened future disappointment. I thought it was in the middle of nowhere much like Lake McDonald Lodge. While not in the middle of nowhere, it was not crowded. Cheryl spotted a bear 12 feet away as we pulled into the hotel.

What is ridiculously easy can also be insanely difficult

Highland Trail hike
So beautiful on the first 400 meters of flat, wide trail.

Highland Trail hike
We are about to round a corner and i wasn’t sure if i’d have the courage to continue.

Highland Trail hike
It’s a big place, far from any hospital.

Highland Trail hike
It’s even scarier in real life.

A narrow trail is not a big deal on the ground, but move it up several hundred or a thousand feet and it can potential paralyze you with fear.

Remain optimistic that these are good seeds you’re planting

St Mary Falls hike
We would not have been able to see St Mary Lake while hiking if not for last year’s fire.
St Mary Falls hike
Nor would we have seen the sky.
St Mary Falls hike
Nor the water.
St Mary Falls hike
We wouldn’t have seen across St Mary Lake either.
St Mary Falls hike
But there would have been occasional openings like this one.
St Mary Falls hike
Nature and fires started by lightning are synonymous.
St Mary Falls hike
St Mary Falls.
St Mary Falls hike
Downstream flowing to St Mary Lake.

St Mary Falls was nice and with just another .6-mile we’d get to enjoy Virginia Falls. The additional .6-hike was not part of the Ranger led program. We did it anyway. How could we not. The extra two-plus hour detour was within our budget.

Henry wasn’t a preacher

Red Bus Tour
Second stop…and so on for the next six hours, including lunch at Lake McDonald Lodge.

Red Bus Tour
Logan Pass and Clements Mountain (left) ahead.

Red Bus Tour driver Henry 2016
He drove a public transit bus in Manhattan.

Red Bus tour
We made many “Gopher stops”. Henry would pull over and we all popped up to stand and take photos, or just stare at the majesty.

Red Bus tour
When the passengers stand up in their seats, they look like a bunch of gophers.

Henry wasn’t a preacher yet his sermon was educational and helpful. His goal was to share the good news of Glacier National Park.

I sat in the back row two-thirds of the trip and the final third, i rode shotgun.
