Habits define you

habits
Habits are either by design or by default.

Ever catch yourself examining other people’s behaviors and instantly liking or disliking certain attributes?

Do you believe that what we like and dislike is a reflection of our own daily behaviors?

Observing others is a great window into how we are perceived by others.

This is scary for the simple reason that the things we dislike in others – that’s what we are unknowingly projecting as well.

This is exciting because we have many positive blind spots. We become aware of the goodness we carry and project.

Our temptation is to downplay both.

“I’m not that annoying.”

“I’m not that wonderful.”

Nothing in excess and know thyself

High School Graduation
Dr. Brenda Fields gave an inspiring and practical speech.

Nothing in excess and know thyself.

Our Son’s Latin teacher has a remarkable reputation at High School, and she was overwhelmingly chosen by the students to deliver the 2018 graduating class the commencement speech.

A significant part of her speech revolved around the Enid – with the two main point being:

  1. Nothing in excess
  2. Know thyself

Sound wisdom back then.

And still today.

How much are you worth?

silence
Only in solitude and self-reflection will our deepest questions be answered.

How much are you worth?

In business, the easiest way to get a true reading is to quit working for someone else and go out on your own.

If you’re not willing to do this, it’s quite possible your sense of worth is grossly inflated.

In life, in the spiritual realm – depending on your convictions – your self-worth cannot be measured. It is far too great to calculate.

It’s quite possible that your spiritual self-worth is grossly deflated.

Ever think like this?

Disney author jeff noel
Writing last night at Magic Kingdom, Day 100. Moments later, the woman in green sat on the step behind me (where the camera sat to take this photo.)

Little did i know the self-timer would catch the 86-year old woman (in green) as i was chronicling Day 100 of an impossible one-year writing challenge.

We spoke for 15 minutes and several times i mentioned i must leave to make the short trip home for dinner with my Family.

Even mentioned having an annual pass to add context for why anyone would leave Magic Kingdom at 7pm on a Friday night.

Later last night, the realization that not once did she ask anything about me.

When we age, do we become self-centered? Do we become lonely?

This brief experience is an opportunity to question ourselves and look in the mirror. Are we more like, or unlike, her?

Does it even matter?
