Old emails from 2010

Epcot water pool
If this was a reflection pool (at Epcot, in 2012), what would we see in ourselves?

Removed the name of the person who commented on my Facebook conversation:

“I hope I’m wrong about this but it sounds like the exchange between you and Carl is you don’t care about what anyone else thinks…even about those who do struggle with depression or the lack of motivation everyday…all that matters is your ” happy, motivated everyday attitude and to the rest be damned”. If that be true for you both it’s a very self centered view. To be sure life is short but in part we’re here to help those who do struggle everyday. I think you need to get your “give a damn” fixed.”

Not sure how to comment on the reflection i’m having from an eight-year od FB conversation, but this is the one thing i’m leaning on now: Let she who has not sinned, cast the first stone.

Final note: This was placed in a file in 2010 with the intent to let some time pass and then respond unemotionally. Totally forgot about it until the recent email purge (in 2018).

Do you see everything as a fleeting gift?

Hope and faith
Yesterday on the Music Choice Soundscapes channel. My reflection was intentional.

Do you see everything as a fleeting gift?

The persistence of vision.

Seeing the future and never waiving from forward progress.

The redemptive power of persistence.

Find meaning.

Learn endurance first.

Everything we have is a gift.

Insert human forgetfulness.

In America, we (stereotypically) think everything is an entitlement.

Paved roads, electricity, public education, clean drinking water, etc, etc.

Our children, our grandchildren, our belongings, our health, etc, etc.

All of it could be taken away quickly, and suddenly, and what are we left with?

This is ours to figure out.

Hope is faith holding out its hand in the dark. – George Iles

We see things so often we rarely see them anymore

Orlando Eye
i see this iconic ‘Orlando Eye‘ so often i rarely see it.

Recently spoke to a person in the aging and senior adult field.

She said if a person won’t recognize a “problem”, then to that person, the problem doesn’t exist.

i found deep solace in this.

Nothing i say or do will help a Family member because the other person doesn’t, can’t, and won’t see what the rest of us easily see.

Take hoarding for example.

Excuse me, is there a plank in my eye?

The difference is like night and day.

Three days ago. Just getting started on this one.

Easter Sunday is tomorrow. Facebook is starting to flood with all the images of Jesus on the cross and all the proclamations of how wonderfully lucky we are to have someone who loves us so much (John 3:16, right?).

Some of my friends and family (and probably some of yours) on Facebook have behaviors that make me question their integrity.

For example:

  • Harboring resentment and anger towards loved ones.
  • Talking negatively behind other people’s backs.
  • Habitually not tapping into the courage and strength we are supposed to be enabled with: “I can do all things through through Christ who strengthens me.”
  • To blame others and refuse to accept responsibility for consequences made from not addressing things, or from inappropriately addressing things.

i’m no Angel and never will be. i work diligently and open-mindedly to remember that the things i dislike in others are almost certainly the very things i demonstrate to others.

So i faithfully chip away at holding on to anything that feels negative.

There’s the chance some of the bullet points above sound like “talking behind someone’s back”.

i get that, accept responsibility for it, and at the same time, take solace in not naming names. i also find comfort, and motivation, in the serenity prayer.

Does it scare anyone else that our blind spots can be a real turnoff?

Scares the heck out of me.

Aim for perfection

Aim for perfection, settle for excellence.

Hone our habits so that we can eliminate as many blind spots as possible.

For example, we can often (daily) catch ourselves being openly critical of people and governments – as if they should both be perfect.

Yet if we exceed the speed limit, don’t come to a full and complete stop at every stop sign, and consistently use our smart phones while driving, we are as imperfect as the people and governments we “despise”.
