Why Go To Church?

Where Is Heaven?
Where Is Heaven?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I’ve gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting their time.”

This started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, until someone wrote this:

“I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this, they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”

When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, “Jesus, could you get that for me?”

Alaska's Mighty Mountains Pale
Alaska's Mighty Mountains Pale

Ever heard of K2?

It’s a mountain, in Pakistan.

A really, really tall mountain.

In fact if it were only 779 feet taller, it would be the world’s tallest.

Surpass Mount Everest as world’s tallest? Wow!

If Mount Everest is my faith, K2 is my fear.

Caution, some think gigantic, unwavering Faith leads to the absence of fear.

It doesn’t.

What does this mean to the average person?

It means believing in God and having tremendous Faith doesn’t guarantee us a fear-immunity.

Has Anyone Ever Asked You?

That Is One Gigantic Cross
That Is One Gigantic Cross

Has anyone ever asked you to describe your Faith?

Or, have you ever thought of trying to explain how great your Faith is?

What if you did?

How would you describe it?

Why?

My Faith is the size of Mount Everest.

Mount Everest, tallest peak in the world at 29,029 feet, or 8,848 meters.

Passion Sunday Was?

Passion?
Passion?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how consciously aware of each passing moment are you?

It’s challenging isn’t it?

To be fully present. All of the time.

As we were driving to Church yesterday morning, I told Cheryl that parking will be a challenge.

Why?

Because yesterday was Passion Sunday.

But I was wrong.

The parking lot was not overflowing.

There was no standing room only.

Vacant parking spaces.

(Those attending held a palm and waved it back and forth as the alter boys and alter girls, Eucharistic Ministers, the Lectors, the Deacon, and the Priest proceeded through the congregation)

And there was something else.

Vacant seats.

Life is hard. Time marches on.
