Easy to forget the reason Glacier is an annual visit is simply because we wanted to imprint on our Son some other place besides home and Sanibel Island. Glacier was a calculated risk. Not guaranteed, yet hard to fail.

It almost failed after the second visit.

What saved it so that we returned for a third consecutive Summer?

Promised our Son we wouldn’t spend all day in the car and at overlooks. Promised to park the car and hike some trails. He agreed to return a third Summer based on that premise.

It changed everything.

Did he fall in love with Glacier?

No.

Was it less boring for him?

Definitely.

Thin place?

25-second 2020 video: Gotta be near the top. You can just feel it as you scan the horizon.

Thin place.

Ever heard of it?

It’s when the space between Earth and Heaven is so thin you can’t tell them apart.

Logan Pass’s Greatest Hits

27-second video: the complete Logan Pass session, from Piegan Mountain.

Couple lifetime friends. Of high quality. Produce a peaceful mind.

And sometimes, you travel alone.

But you are never alone.

Manifest that last sentence to suit your mindset.

Happy present moment.

Amazed and amazing

14-second video: be amazed and be amazing…your blessings and your opportunities.

Amazed at the courage and tenacity i demonstrated to reach Piegan’s summit. Near the summit, saw two other climbers far off. Never saw them again.

Amazing that i pushed myself so far past my previous comfort zone. Now, today, two years later, the obvious question – should i have done that alone? September 29, 2020. Literally no one there to assist if you get into a challenge requiring more than one person to solve.

Note: September 29 is important context. Any day in late September or early October may be the last day the Pass (and the road) is accessible. Few visitors this time of year. And quite literally no one heading to Piegan’s summit. Perhaps no one heading there until next Summer.

Tax Day, 2000

8-second video: Wrote last year about this exact experience and what it taught me about Grizzly Bear and human interaction. To witness it laid the foundation for a once-in-a-lifetime experience a few days later.

One of the first times intentionally using a specific date – to help remember the “anniversary” date – was April 15, 2000.

Tax Day 2000.

There’s a penalty if you don’t do the work by April 15.

There’s a penalty if you don’t do the work to get and stay healthy.

In 1999, was disgusted (devastated?) at how far apart my intentions to live a healthy life were compared to my actual behaviors to live a healthy life.

Rationalized it took me years to get so slothful that i could reverse engineer a slow and steady comeback. Not in one or two years, but over the course of five-10 years.

Thus began running from our mailbox to our next neighbor’s mailbox. Once a day for a week. Second week, two mailboxes a day for a week. Third week, three mailboxes a day. Etc.

Tax Day and one-mailbox-a-day.

It worked.
