Walt Disney World Main Street at Halloween — Kinda scary to think you should be able to convey the passion of iconic Biblical figures.

Most people are conditioned to follow along in the missal while the Lector reads.

Why?

Shouldn’t the focus be on Saint Paul or Jeremiah?

Shouldn’t the reader be speaking in a way the requires no textbook?

Why not just ask everyone to (silently) read the scripture to themselves?

Try to imagine the time, place, audience, and context in which the original person said those things.

Holy Family Orlando Catholic Church — Last night as i arrived for “Lector practice”.

Had a hunch it was going to be significant.

What?

This Sunday’s reading.

Haven’t been to “Lector practice” in years.

Why?

A busy travel schedule for starters.

i didn’t go last night to practice.

i went for clarity.

And sure enough, “Reader one” (my assignment) has a significant responsibility on Palm Sunday.

Years ago i was caught not knowing. i did fine. But i was scared to death for being ignorant.

St Patrick's Social Hall — Yesterday morning waiting for the teen to get a donut.

“Uh, i have to tell you”, he said as we passed each other. He turned around and took a few steps to come to me.

“I wish you did all the readings. You’re the best reader.”

Humbled, obviously, all i could mutter was, “It’s God’s Holy Spirit”.

i am but God’s vessel.

A vessel that prepares disproportionately compared to the actual length of the one-minute reading.

Yeah, yeah, everyone knows that.

Ok then, why doesn’t everyone read like they know it?

Father Hunt was a guest speaker during a half-day Lector training session i attended a few years back.
