RIP Jack Noel 2001

Glacier Park hikes
Glacier National Park. My Dad, Jack Noel, never visited.

RIP Jack Noel.

Please don’t live in the past and dwell on what was lost or could have been.

Live fully present now and think about traditions and intentionality.

Getting to a daily place where you can be fully present will be achieved only though the trials, errors, and triumphs of a lifetime of ordinary days.

Mourn, celebrate, or both

Disney Marathon detour
Walt Disney World Marathon sign…my gym on right. Walking home.

Mourn, celebrate, or both?

Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Fifty-one years old.

Twin 17-year olds.

Husband of 25 years.

These are stats many people never get close to experiencing.

None of us who pass the half-century mark should carry too much (if any) regret.

What a blessing to have stats like those.

The Facebook Messenger note had the seed of death

Disney Business books
Disney Business books fill some of my shelves.

When we are at our best, we are unafraid of death.

When are we at our best and when do feel this way?

Never?

Maybe.

A week ago, the Facebook note was sent to nine people in messenger…the first people that came to mind in sharing the news.

i was in that group.

The message said that a dear Disney Institute colleague was “very sick” in the hospital.

First glance made it sound bad but not terminal.

My take leaned to terminal.

So i reached out to someone in our group i thought knew the most.

i , unfortunately, was correct.

In a matter of days, the Disney Institute (from the early 2000’s) group has grown to 40+.

Most of us will see each other in two days at her funeral.

At some point, our daily efforts should slowly and steadily begin our preparation for our exit.

We’re in charge of this and it ain’t no secret.

Too busy, right?

Have you planned your end of life?

Tracy Chapman song
Touching song.

Have you planned your end of life?

Yes?

So excited and happy for you.

Call, or text to coordinate a call, and tell me all about it.

i (desperately) want to learn from you.

Or, if you answered no, why not?

You are planning to take care of it, right?

Because if you don’t know, no one else has got a clue.

Less than six months to live?

Disney's Jungle Cruise Christmas tree
Yesterday. Fun. Creative. Wacky.

One week ago on December 8 was the official “six months remaining to live” from the original “what would you do if you had 10 years left to live?”

Such an obscure, crazy, and uncomfortable goal.

What if it transforms my life?

What if it alienates me from others?

What if?

Life is full of habits and rituals that never allow most humans to legitimately and originally answer, “What if?”

This is the headwaters for regret.
