Pre was a rebel

A classic “To whom it may concern” letter…
Thank you Lauren Fleshman, for being a rebel.

Steve Prefontaine, Pre, was a rebel.

Pre was also an Oregon runner.

Pre held American running records. He held the 1972 Munich Olympics 5,000 meters race lead three times, including the final backstretch. He finished fourth in what was his gutsiest race ever.

Lasse Viren, who won the 10,000 in Olympic and World-Record time, out-kicked Pre.

Viren went on to win double Olympic Gold again in the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 5k and 10k.

The other side of comfort, predictability, and conformity is non-conformity.

Steve Prefontaine not only inspired people with his assertive running style, Pre inspired others with his thinking.

He did not like doing things the way others recommended, particularly his coach Bill Bowerman.

Bowerman co-founded Nike with Phil Knight.

Bowerman was the 1972 Team USA Olympic Track & Field team head coach.

Bowerman was Pre’s coach.

Bowerman tried to break Pre from being a front runner.

Pre may have won the Olympic 5000 gold if he ran his own race. We will never know because Pre took Coach Bowerman’s advice and stayed with the pack.

The pack boxed Pre in and he was unable to break free.

Pre is not at his best when boxed in.

None of us are.

Hayward Field Episode Three – Strength

The Track & Field faithful and devoted fans will fill every seat. The World’s Track & Field Mecca.

Hayward Field Episode Three – Strength:

Ran out of time to prepare the agenda for strength.

Will need to revisit as soon as possible.

A key reason our spirit is critical is to handle setbacks just like this one.

Do the best you can then forgive yourself and move on.

It’s that simple, and potentially that challenging.

Disney Customer Service speaker video

One of the coolest leaders i ever had was Guy Smith. He was/is a brilliant facilitator. His example taught me the most. When Guy and Dennis (below) co-facilitated, it was Magic to watch.

Dennis is a valued and trusted former Disney colleague and an incredibly polished speaker. A master, really.

If it was between Dennis and you to be picked as the opening (or closing) conference Disney Customer Service Keynote Speaker, what would you have to do to get picked over Dennis?

Private meet and greet with Mickey Mouse

A private Mickey Mouse meet and greet is an incredible experience. Magical. Even for a room full of Disney Cast Members.

How?

Why?

Not sure.

Luck?

Probably.

Courage or comfort, not both

Taking a few Disney toys and a pin to Kuwait (7k miles from home) is easy and scalable on every trip, everywhere.

Brene Brown is a thought leader.

She says that you must choose between courage or comfort, you can’t have both.

She’s smart, no doubt.

Yes and, going to respectfully disagree with the statement.

Why?

While not an intellectual, at 60, coupled with deep and broad Disney experience and especially the Disney Institute leadership expertise, i’ll go up against anyone on personal and organizational vibrancy.

Any. One.

Any. Where.

Any. Time.

Why disagree with Brene’s claim?

Because i have both courage and comfort.

At 60, this is a reality.

So how can i be wrong?

Perhaps what Brene implies is that she cannot have both.

Then, what she says is worth wondering why she doesn’t have courage and comfort and why i do.

Not gifted, and as (formerly) insecure as the next person, yet my life’s work has put me in this position to speak authoritatively.

Weird to say it, but at the end of the day, how is what i have to say anything but true?

The beauty of 60 is that i believe we are both right.

Also at 60, i am certain that we, meaning anyone, believe what we want to believe.

If i were you, i’d believe better choices are available.

For example, courage and comfort.
