St Mary, day 1, spirit

Mountain scene from Logan Pass
St Mary Lake from behind Reynolds Mountain in Glacier National Park. We are staying at St Mary lodge, near the far east end of 10-mile long St Mary Lake. It’s just out of sight around the left horizon.

St Mary, Montana.

Glorious for a few short Summer months.

Brutally wild and desolate for the rest of the year.

“‘Scuze me while i kiss the sky!”

‘Scuze me while we kiss everything in Swiftcurrent Valley.”

It’s been an unexpected life-changing, half-century ride.

Swiftcurrent Valley, hope you never tire from our gratitude.

Merry Christmas, “Swifty”. A Swifty is a Swiftcurrent Motor Inn employee. Christmas in July is a National Park tradition in many National Parks.

The ROI on annual, yearly, extended-length visits is simple.

You see it all.

Used to say this incessantly until hiking with Jody Maberry. He taught me to hike quietly.

When we wake up in Swiftcurrent and Many Glacier Valleys, we feel (humbly) smart about positioning ourselves in the most distant Glacier accommodations from the airport.

This effort allows us to hike incredibly popular Glacier trails without having to drive anywhere; without having to awaken at an ungodly hour to drive 2.5 hours to try to get a coveted trailhead parking space.

14-second video: Fishercap Lake is the best place for decent Moose spotting odds. Seeing Moose on trails is mostly reserved for locations with few to no nearby lakes. This video is 1/2 mile from Fishercap Lake.

Trails are for every living creature.

Makes it interesting for all creatures, including humans.
