Because we didn’t have an agenda, taking a cabin tour was easy.

It was helpful to have Howard see Cabin 20 (next to Lake McDonald Lodge) and these two cabins (10 miles to the South in Apgar Village).

It was more worth it than i had imagined

Grinnell Glacier Overlook — Howard is a quiet guy in general, but i’m pretty sure he was diggin’ this view, and the effort it took to secure it.

Grinnell Glacier Overlook — There was never a time when we weren’t mindful of the wind, the drop, the loose rocks, and our responsibility to be extraordinarily safe.

Grinnell Glacier Overlook — Just before our descent to Granite Park Chalet (barely visible in upper left) we enjoyed seeing the trail we had climbed and smiled that the rest of our efforts would be downhill.

Grinnell Glacier Overlook — We spent 50 minutes at Grinnell Glacier Overlook. We could have spent much more, but we had an appointment to honor.

It was more worth it than i had imagined and i had imagined excellence.

The morning, the solitude, the effort, the ticking clock…

And knowing this could be the last time either of us would ever see this.

Granite Park Chalet — Granite Park Chalet is just minutes away, after six hours on the trail.

Granite Park Chalet — Granite Park Chalet has three buildings (four if you count the toilet), 20 Guest rooms, staff rooms, a lobby, kitchen, and two small utility rooms behind the kitchen.

Legit wilderness rush lasted all day

Grinnell Glacier Hike — It was an exciting, and unexpected, encounter.

Grinnell Glacier Hike — We backed pretty far away before we got our cameras out. The zoom makes it look closer than it was.

Grinnell Glacier Hike — All of us frozen until we could determine it was safe to proceed.

Grinnell Glacier Hike — Decent distance away considering we had rounded the rock corner where the Ram is standing.

Grinnell Glacier Hike — At 3.5 miles one way and 1,800′ elevation gain, it wasn’t a difficult hike. Almost there.

Grinnell Glacier Hike — Starting to sense something uniquely special. Nearing the trail’s end, and Grinnell Glacier’s first sighting.

Hikers are constantly advising hikers in the opposite direction what lies ahead.

“Hey, we saw three Mountain Goats about 300 yards down from the trail, near the waterfall.”

We joked that unless we can pet them, it probably wouldn’t excite us.

You quickly get spoiled when you have super close encounters with the bigger animals.

Grinnell Glacier has receded and will be gone by 2030 (estimated).
