Four random, yet powerful moments out of nowhere

WPS Senior night
The senior players and equipment managers were honored last night.

WPS Basketball
Friday night High School basketball.

WPS boys basketball team
Senior night, their final home game.

High School Basketball scoreboard
Our great team got handily defeated by an even greater team.

Bad show example at Disney Convention Cener
At the start of the day i went to check the marque to see if there was a Disney Institute program. This event board is a “bad show” example.

Four random but intensely thought-provoking encounters yesterday, in chronological order:

  1. I haven’t slept well in two years.
  2. No one’s ever asked me that, ever.
  3. I’m diabetic and have MS.
  4. He’s suspended because of two technical fouls.

Recap:

1. A Disney University colleague’s comment after he pulled over on his way to work after passing me as i ran on Disney property. We chatted for 15 minutes.

2. The Gold’s Gym manager’s response after i asked him what his big 2016 goal is.

3. A middle-aged woman’s first response after i asked her what motivates her to work out so hard.

4. Asked the High School Director why one of the team’s star players was missing from the lineup.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

It is likely the only weekly scripture for many

It is likely the only weekly scripture for many.

Read Proclaim like you mean it.

The alternative is simple. Read in a safe, traditional, and (unintentionally) uninspired fashion.

How does that approach serve?

i have no good answer.

It’s the little things, right?

It’s the little things, right?

Last night there were four of us remaining. The other 40 had left.

i had both hands full as i was leaving and asked for the final time, “Is there anything i can help with?”

No, we’re fine, we’ve got everything.

After the long walk to the car, i packed into the trunk what i had carried. Instead of unlocking the car to drive home, i went back upstairs and said, “i don’t know what i was thinking when i offered to help with both hands full. But now i have two empty hands, what do you need help with?”

i told them i’m always reminding our son, “If you help me do this it will get done quickly.”

It felt good to help them carry boxes to their cars.

Had i not done such a simple gesture, i would have thought about the missed opportunity for far too long.

Written words are not the same as spoken

A father's reminder to be a great dad
The jar on the right will become empty on my 60th birthday.

What i’m specifically asking is have you given yourself a realistic end date to do everything in life you want to do? No one knows how long they’ll live and most live like it’s going to be forever – and thus perpetuate postponing the good stuff until life’s conditions (and choices) are better or easier. We may not get next week or next month. And i am not afraid of 60 (no male on my Dad’s side has lived past 60), but i have made 60 the deadline for putting a dent in the Universe. i began when i turned 50 – a decade (rather than “6-months to live”)…now there are 3.6 years remaining. i would have never left (retired at 55) Disney after 30 years had i not heard a ticking clock. i hope i live past 60, but i am not banking on it. So anything after 60 will be pure bonus time.

A deadline changes the way we look at fear and decisions.

Sorry, didn’t mean to be self-centered, but i thought that context might help you understand the question better. Not to see life in 10-year chucks, but to see life as if there are only 10 years left.

Making mistakes is the gateway to wisdom

Magic Kingdom Christmas Tree
Taking photos has been a joy since i was six years old.

Magic Kingdom Christmas decorations
Somewhere in the vicinity of 8:05am yesterday.

Magic Kingdom Cast Member window on Main Street
The Cast Member dedicated window for every CM that ever was, is now, or ever will be.

Casey's Corner at Magic Kingdom
Casey’s Corner…what is that up ahead?

Magic Kingdom Christmas parade filming
Disney Christmas parade filming songs in different languages.

i’ve told Chapin (15) to make as many mistakes now (before moving away) as he can – and have the help and support from us. The caveat is that he can’t do anything hurtful, immoral, unethical, etc. For example, ask someone out who might say no, take a risk, get involved, speak up, stand out, blend in, don’t get involved, play it safe, etc, etc…everything comes with choices and consequences…some we will regret doing and many we will regret not doing – learn to overcome fear, create effective (and maybe efficient) decision making processes, etc, etc.
