Pre held American running records. He held the 1972 Munich Olympics 5,000 meters race lead three times, including the final backstretch. He finished fourth in what was his gutsiest race ever.
Lasse Viren, who won the 10,000 in Olympic and World-Record time, out-kicked Pre.
Viren went on to win double Olympic Gold again in the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the 5k and 10k.
The other side of comfort, predictability, and conformity is non-conformity.
Steve Prefontaine not only inspired people with his assertive running style, Pre inspired others with his thinking.
He did not like doing things the way others recommended, particularly his coach Bill Bowerman.
Bowerman co-founded Nike with Phil Knight.
Bowerman was the 1972 Team USA Olympic Track & Field team head coach.
Bowerman was Pre’s coach.
Bowerman tried to break Pre from being a front runner.
Pre may have won the Olympic 5000 gold if he ran his own race. We will never know because Pre took Coach Bowerman’s advice and stayed with the pack.
The pack boxed Pre in and he was unable to break free.
Pre is not at his best when boxed in.
None of us are.

Ever find yourself coming up with a much better answer, about a day late?
Last night, after returning from a long, 3-day speaking trip to Oregon, and following a dip in the pool, we were enjoying my wife’s home-cooked meal.
We were getting caught up, the way many Families do, where frequent travel is part of the landscape.
Cheryl asked me the highlight of the trip. She knows how much joy there is in giving your all to an eager and appreciative audience – it’s my standard answer because it’s so predictably true.
But that wasn’t what she was asking.
So I shared two highlights: The morning sunrise next to Mount Bachelor. Didn’t see the sun until 90-minutes after it rose, so I watched the sunrise move slowly down the mountain, until Mount Bachelor was engulfed in the sun’s heavenly warmth.
And there was the breathtaking 40-mile drive south of Bend, through the majestic Ponderosa Pine Forests, to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument to see the Big Obsidian Lava Flow, and the hour-long hike over the broken obsidian, and white and grey pumice.
But then this morning, while riding the lawn mower, the epiphany.
The highlight of the trip was really the part where I missed her the most.
Had lunch at the Starbuck’s on 13th Avenue at the opposite corner of “O”- The Duck Store.
Eugene, Oregon, besides being home to the University of Oregon, is also known as Track Town USA.
After lunch and a quick visit to the bookstore for a “Stop Pre” t-shirt, it was off to Hayward Field.
As soon as I stepped onto the track, a siren blared from the firehouse across the street. When my son and I hear a siren, without fail, we say a prayer for the driver, the helpers, and the family or families that are involved.
It was then the realization became conscious, I hadn’t started the day, in my hotel room, on my knees. Right there on the spot, I got down on my knees (in Lane 8 actually) and said the “morning” prayers.
Funny how a 20-hour travel day can throw you a curve. Funny how just abut anything can throw you a curve. Batter up.
