How much Neanderthal instinct remains?

Be a noticer.

Completely focused on the crowd of vultures to the left, something told me to stop and look over my right shoulder.

Perhaps this is the last remaining neanderthal DNA – the instinct to always be aware of things all around you.

Every engagement has the same three objectives

About 15 hours ago in Texas. The closing commitment exercise – 60 minutes to plant the seeds of personal and organizational vibrancy. Pictured here are some giveaways and some delivery notes.

Have fun, lean into discomfort, and .think .differently

Swimming in February

iPhone pool app
Yesterday we went swimming at sunset.

Swimming in February.

Last night was the third time this month Chapin has been in the pool.

i don’t keep track, but it must have been my 6th or 7th time this month.

In fact, went in at 10am after yesterday’s bike ride.

Growing up in Pennsylvania, swimming in February, surrounded by palm trees, was only a dream.

We resist and fear change automatically

Homeowner meeting
Controversy and fear of change. Vacant land near our community has most people worried about change.

Sundays are a traditional “church-day” for many Americans.

Yet there’s decent media coverage that church attendance is declining.

Lots of “justifiable reasons” for only going to Church on Easter and Christmas Sundays.

We didn’t go yesterday.

Why?

“Justifiable reasons”.

Which leads me here…

We resist and fear change automatically.

The change that has engulfed our 70-acre neighborhood the past decade is best described as an urban-growth tsunami.

Similar to what New York City looked like before Christopher Columbus discovered America and what it looks like now.

In a 15-mile by two-mile north-to-south corridor along State Road 535, there was nothing here but wilderness.

It has all been aggressively developed.

No more open space.

But there is one spot that is sparsely populated.

We are in a rare 200-acre part of Orange County that has homes zoned from one home per two acres to one per 10-acres.

There’s pressure to change this.

Every living thing is part of the food chain

trash cans
One person’s trash is another’s treasure and vice versa.

Every living thing is part of the food chain.

Every living thing knows what will eat it.

And every living thing knows what to eat.

Been this way since time began.

But.

Humans transformed this when we started to become civilized.

We essentially evolved to the top, assuming we have pushed the wild far enough away – yet as soon as we venture to wild places, we revert to our designated place in the food chain.

With great privilege comes great responsibility.

Also, we can be reminded what the food chain makes painfully obvious – people in our life are a gift and they can be taken away at any time for any reason.
