What would you say if you gave a “last lecture”

Randy Pausch
Yesterday Facebook shared a memory – July 25 is the day in 2008 that Randy Pausch died.

A decade ago, Randy Pausch was famous for about a year.

He gave the infamous “Last Lecture” speech at Carnegie Mellon University where he was retiring.

He was retiring because he was going to die soon.

He wrote a book by the same name, before he died, to serve as a legacy for his three children (all under age seven).

Will your death be the third most magnificent day in your life?

Family memories
Jane and Larry Brockman’s wedding day, 1970. They moved to Orlando from California in 1984 and began serving at Holy Family Orlando Catholic Church.

Will your death be the third most magnificent day in your life?

Depends entirely on your beliefs.

Whatever you believe, my wish for you is that you believe like you mean it.

Yesterday was Jane’s funeral at Holy Family.

Larry, Jane’s husband and one of our Deacons, gave a wonderful tribute to Jane. Jane’s middle daughter, Katie, did the same.

It was beautiful.

Glorious even.

Discipline

inspiring friend
Mike helps us with home improvement projects. His wife and my wife work together at Disney. Photo: yesterday after i walked home from the gym.

Just like going to the gym, or going running or biking, you need daily discipline to focus on your spirit.

Mike (above) and i had a deep, yet casual conversation about life and death.

A few years back, Mike was one of two people in a group of 11 who survived cancer treatment.

His cancer is back.

Mike has two choices.

He can opt to not have his ear removed, and die sooner than later.

Or…

He can have his ear removed, along with a big patch of the side of his face – down to the bone. A patch from his leg will be removed to reconstruct what’s taken from his face. Remove a couple teeth, reroute glands, nerves, etc.

He joked about his conversations with his Doctors who discussed prosthetic ear options.

Mike suggested a Star Trek Vulcan ear, so he can say he’s half Vulcan, like Spock.

Or, how about an on/off switch for when he’s near his wife.

His courage, faith, and perspective inspire me.

He’s an Army veteran.

He knows all too well how fragile and ugly llife is and how all we can do is make choices and move forward.

Consistently thinking this way requires a learned and applied discipline.

My advice to is this: learn it and apply it.

Same old, same old – we must not tire from routines that serve us.

Everyone, myself included, is in one of three places right now.

  1. Going through a hell no one knows about.
  2. Just came out of a hell no one knew about.
  3. Unbeknownst to us, is about to go into a hell no one will know about.

And some of us, myself included, are experiencing more than one of these right now.
